NEW DELHI: J&K CM Omar Abdullah called on Union home minister Amit Shah on Wednesday. This is the first meeting between the two since Abdullah took over as CM.
Both home ministry sources and Abdullah later described the meeting as a courtesy call. However, as per a PTI report, the situation in Kashmir , particularly in the light of Sunday's terror attack that had killed seven employees of an infrastructure project in Ganderbal , and the issue of restoration of J&K statehood are believed to have come up for discussion.
Agencies said Abdullah may also meet PM Narendra Modi during his stay here.
During the first meeting of the Abdullah Cabinet, a resolution urging the Centre to restore the status of J&K as a state, was passed. Abdullah has stressed on the need for security forces to step up vigil in the wake of the Ganderbal attack. "Now the administration will have to maintain their alert level even more and ensure that such attacks do not take place," he had said.
Police and law and order falls under the jurisdiction of J&K lieutenant governor, who also chairs the Unified Headquarters meetings that decide on counter-terror and security strategies. A UHQ meeting is scheduled for Thursday.
