NEW DELHI: Andhra Pradesh deputy chief minister Pawan Kalyan on Monday nudged his cabinet colleague and state home minister Vangalapudi Anitha over rising crimes, saying the law and order situation "would be different" had he been the minister with the home portfolio.
The Janasena chief and ally of the ruling TDP government, Pawan Kalyan urged the state government to deal with crime by taking cues from UP CM Yogi Adityanath's model for law and order and also pitched for stricter and harsher punishments used in countries like the Middle East and Singapore to curb criminal activities.
"These criminals should be dealt in the same fashion as Yogi Adityanath in Uttar Pradesh. Until then they will not listen. You are pushing us into that kind of situation."
The Janasena chief holds the Panchayat Raj, Forest, and Environment portfolios and the remark is seen to have been directed at the state home minister rather on the TDP government itself led by Chandra Babu Naidu. "I am telling home minister Anitha, you are the home minister…please take on the responsibilities of the Home Ministry. If I take up the Home portfolio, things will be different; remember that," the Janasena chief said.
The deputy CM's remarks comes against the background of recent law and order issues, particularly following the rape and murder of a four-year-old girl by a relative in Tirupati district.
Anitha belongs to the TDP, part of the ruling NDA alliance of BJP, TDP, and Janasena in Andhra Pradesh.
The actor-turned politician also cautioned NDA alliance leaders from TDP, BJP, and Janasena to avoid playing "individual games." While acknowledging that one or two leaders might cause issues, he assured that "no one could disrupt the NDA alliance among BJP, TDP, and Janasena."
Reacting to Pawan Kalyan's comments, municipal administration minister P Narayana said the Janasena chief said something based on a particular incident and the home minister would also take action against it.
"Whether it is CM or Deputy CM, they can comment if some department does not function properly and automatically they are alerted. There may be some legal hurdles for police to undertake certain acts. There may be delays due to that," he said.
Meanwhile, Kalyan on Saturday floated a new wing in his Janasena party 'Narasimha Varahi Ganam' to protect Sanatana Dharma. "I am starting a separate wing in Janasena for Sanatana Dharma protection and naming it as Narasimha Varahi Ganam," said the actor-turned politician in a press release.
