JD Vance claims 'abortion' comparable to 'slavery' in resurfaced audio clip

In an audio clip shared by Vice President Kamala Harris 's campaign, Republican Vice Presidential nominee JD Vance could be heard comparing " abortion " to " slavery ," suggesting that both issues inflict deep suffering and possess a morally distorting effect on society.

“There’s something comparable between abortion and slavery,” Vance said, “and that while the people who obviously suffer the most are those subjected to it, I think it has this morally distorting effect on the entire society.”

This stark comparison fueled the fire of criticism directed at Vance, especially from those who champion reproductive rights .

Historically, Vance has not shied away from advocating for a nationwide abortion ban. His campaign for the Senate was built on a platform aimed at eliminating abortion, and he previously expressed support for a “federal response” to prevent women from traveling out of state for procedures. In 2022, he signaled a commitment to restrict abortions beyond 15 weeks of pregnancy.

In a May appearance on Face the Nation, Vance said, "I am pro-life. I want to save as many babies as possible." He characterised his opposition to late-term abortions as "totally reasonable" but acknowledged that Trump's approach seeks to empower Americans to make their own decisions on the matter. This nuanced position reflects a strategic pivot, aiming to balance his foundational beliefs with the pragmatic realities of political campaigning.

The abortion issue has proven to be a potent weapon for Democrats in elections, particularly in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade. With multiple ballot measures related to abortion set to appear in various states this November, it could significantly influence the upcoming presidential election.

Kamala Harris has capitalised on this dynamic, sharply criticising Vance's views after his nomination as Trump’s running mate. “Make no mistake: If elected, JD Vance will help implement the extreme Project 2025 plan for a second Trump term,” she said, outlining a vision that includes restricting access to contraception and enacting a nationwide ban on abortion.
