Eight people were killed and two others rescued after a boat capsized during a sudden thunderstorm on Lake Tahoe over the weekend. Among the deceased was Josh Pickles, a senior director at DoorDash, who was on board with members of his family during a birthday celebration.
Pickles was on board with his parents, Terry Pickles, 73, and Paula Bozinovich, 71, of Redwood City, as well as his uncle, Peter Bayes, 72, of Lincoln. The family was celebrating Bozinovich's birthday when the incident occurred, according to a family statement issued Tuesday.
Pickles was a senior director at DoorDash, a technology company that provides on-demand food delivery services, connecting customers with local restaurants and stores. He remained associated with the food delivery app for about seven years.
The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that ten people were aboard when the storm hit on Saturday afternoon. High winds and waves over 8 feet led to water coming on board, stalling the engine and ultimately causing the boat to overturn.
The storm, described by meteorologists as unexpectedly intense, brought winds of up to 35 mph and rapidly changing conditions
Pickles' wife, Jordan Sugar-Carlsgaard did not join the family at the lake as was at home with their 7-month-old daughter, expressed deep sorrow on the tragic mishap. The couple were married in 2023, both worked in the San Francisco tech sector, Jordan at Airbnb and Josh at DoorDash.
Also among those killed were Timothy O'Leary, 71, of Auburn, California; Theresa Giullari, 66, and James Guck, 69, of Honeyoye, New York; and Stephen Lindsay, 63, of Springwater, New York, according to the local coroner's office.
Two individuals were rescued shortly after the boat capsized. Their identities and current medical conditions had not been released as of Tuesday.
