BENGALURU: Lending a helping hand to a neighbour turned into a nightmare for an unsuspecting man in Yelahanka: What started as a simple favour of tossing out a trash bag for his neighbour ended with him landing in police custody as the bag contained a stillborn baby!
The man, caught completely off guard, insisted he had no idea what was inside the bag. According to him, he was just responding to a young girl's urgent request to throw the bag near the dumpyard. Based on his statement, cops knocked on his neighbour's door and what emerged was a sordid tale: The 17-year-old-girl, who had handed him the trash bag, confessed she was the mother of the stillborn.
A vegetable vendor, she was in love with an autorickshaw driver residing in the same area. She became pregnant from their relationship but managed to hide it from her parents, who are labourers. She developed pains in her eighth month. With the help of her friend, she delivered the baby at her home. However, the baby died during the process. She packed the stillborn in a plastic bag and gave it to the unsuspecting neighbour, with the request to toss it.
According to Yelahanka police, they were alerted about a male baby found in a plastic bag in a garbage pile in Yelahanka. Police found CCTV footage of a man disposing of the bag and tracked him down. However, after the events became clear, he was allowed to return home.
Based on the girl's confession, police arrested her lover for raping and impregnating a minor. He has been booked under the Pocso Act and remanded in judicial custody.
