Cuttack: A day after a scuffle between students and some outsiders in the campus, the Ravenshaw University in Cuttack has sought police protection for the students and staff and their families.
In a letter to DCP, Cuttack, the Registrar of the prestigious university said tension prevailed in the campus due to disturbances created by the outsiders and sought the former’s intervention for deployment of police to ensure safety of the students and the faculty.
The Registrar said some outsiders, who are non-students, have been holding protests against the suggestion of Union Education Minister for changing the name of the university since September 1.
Stating that around 3,000 students were staying in different hostels and the staff and their families in the university campus, the Registrar said, “The situation is aggravating with each passing day. The safety of the students and the staff is at stake due to simmering tension which needs urgent police action to restore normalcy in the campus.”
Earlier in the day, the issue rocked the Odisha Assembly with members of the ruling BJP and opposition BJD and Congress entering into heated exchange in the House.
