Things to do before, during and after Lunar Eclipse

Send Push
September's full moon, which is a supermoon , will be partially eclipsed by Earth. This event will be witnessed by Saturn. This full moon is the second of four consecutive supermoons and hence will appear bigger than usual. In India, the eclipse is estimated to begin in the early morning hours at around 07:42 AM and will end at 08:45 AM IST on September 18 .

As per NASA’s Preston Dyches, “You’ll see a little bite taken out of one side of the moon over about an hour.” A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes between the sun and the moon. The Earth then casts a shadow on the Moon, eclipsing the moon. However, the September 18th per cent lunar eclipse is a partial one, and only 8 percent of the moon will be covered with Earth’s shadow.

This eclipse will be visible in North America, South America, Antarctica, Africa, Europe, Western Asia, and southwestern Russia. However, if you can’t view it, you can always watch the live stream of it on various channels.

Eclipses in India hold great cultural significance for Hindus. While there is no scientific evidence that eating during an eclipse is harmful to health, still, they are still not considered auspicious, and hence there are some precautions that Indians observe during an eclipse. Here is your guide on things to do before, during, and after a Lunar Eclipse.

What to do before a lunar eclipse?
An eclipse is often associated with negative energies, and thus it is advised not to consume, eat, or drink during the event. It is believed by many that eating during an eclipse can cause indigestion. Eat a proper meal so that you can see the eclipse without feeling hungry. Make sure that the meal is light, like dal, sabzi, roti, and rice. Add turmeric and basil to the food, as they have anti-inflammatory properties. These foods will help maintain energy levels. It is also advisable to hydrate yourself. Coconut water, ginger water, tulsi leaves tea, and fresh fruits can be included in your pre-lunar eclipse meal. In some other cultures, sesame seeds are specially eaten for protection and good fortune.

Things to do during a lunar eclipse Once the event begins, make sure to get comfortable and take a break. This celestial event is peaceful and gives us a moment of introspection. One can always read a book, listen to some calming music, or chant some mantras. The mantras will help counter the negative energies that are related to eclipses. Avoid eating or munching on snacks; a little moderation should be practised. This is also a good time to direct your mind towards meditation and reflection.

What to do after an eclipse?
Once the lunar eclipse is over, people often bathe or shower. This is a symbolic way of washing away all the negative energies they must have absorbed. Taking a shower also helps the mind and body to refresh and rejuvenate themselves. People also pray after their shower as a way to accept the renewed energies around them. Practice gratitude and be humble. The celestial event can be a sign to start fresh and continue your day with enthusiasm.
